FreeCell privacy

FreeCell (One Off FreeCell on the App Store) is a card game for iPhone, iPad and Mac, made by One Off Endeavors. This page covers the app. It's short, because the app itself collects nothing: no accounts of its own, no ads, no analytics, no tracking. Two Apple services can carry a little of your game for you — iCloud and Game Center — and this page says exactly what.
The short version
- I collect no personal data — none, from anyone.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking, no third-party code. The app has no network code of its own.
- Your game, your settings, your Top 10 and your count of wins are kept on your device.
- If you use iCloud, your Top 10 and wins count sync to your other devices through your own iCloud account.
- If you're signed in to Game Center, the time of each win is posted to its leaderboard under your Game Center name.
What stays on your device
So you can pick up where you left off, the app saves the game in progress — the cards, the game number, your move count, the time played, your undos, and whether it's a Hard Core game — in its own private storage on your device. It remembers your settings: Hard Core, whether to resume your game when the app opens, whether to play cards home automatically, whether to ask before ending a game, the Restart button, your win animation, and the card faces and backs you picked. And it keeps your Top 10 — the time, moves, game number and date of your fastest wins — and how many games you've won. None of this is sent to me, and I never see it.
Deleting the app deletes all of it from that device. Your device's own backups (iCloud Backup, or a backup to your computer) may include this app data the same way they include any app's; that's between you and Apple, and I have no access to it.
iCloud
If you're signed in to iCloud, the app keeps a copy of your Top 10 and your wins count in iCloud's key-value storage so they appear on your other devices. To count wins without ever counting one twice, each device keeps its own tally under a random name the app makes up the first time it runs — a string of letters and numbers that isn't your device's name, serial number or any other identifier, and says nothing about you. Those copies live in your iCloud account, handled by Apple; I can't see them. Without iCloud, or with iCloud turned off for FreeCell in your device's iCloud settings, everything simply stays on each device.
Game Center
If you're signed in to Apple's Game Center, the app asks it to sign you in when it opens, and posts the time of each win to the matching leaderboard (normal or Hard Core). Leaderboards show your Game Center name and time to other players — who can see you depends on your own Game Center privacy settings — and, as with any leaderboard, to me as the game's maker. A game you restart doesn't count and isn't posted. Game Center is Apple's service, with its own terms; you can sign out of it or change who sees you in your device's settings, and the game plays exactly the same without it.
These connections are made by Apple's iCloud and Game Center on the app's behalf; on the Mac, that's why the sandboxed app is allowed to make outgoing connections. Nothing else uses them.
Beta testing with TestFlight
If you're testing a pre-release version, you install it through Apple's TestFlight. TestFlight is Apple's service, not part of the app, and it has its own terms. Apple shows me a limited amount about testers — for an email invitation, the name and address it was sent to — along with basic facts such as installs and sessions. If you choose to send feedback or a screenshot, or if the app crashes and your device is set to share crash reports, those come to me through Apple too. I use them only to fix the app, and I don't share them. Pre-release builds use the same Game Center as the released game, so times you post while testing are real leaderboard entries. Apple's handling of all this is described in Apple's Privacy Policy.
Kids
The app is fine for any age, and since it collects nothing, it collects nothing from children either. Game Center and iCloud follow the settings of the Apple Account they're signed in with, including any limits a parent has set.
Changes
If a future version ever needs to handle data differently, this page will say so, with a new date at the top.
