FreeCell support

Help with FreeCell (One Off FreeCell, now in beta on TestFlight) for iPhone, iPad and Mac. The rules and controls are in the app too, under More ▸ How to Play.

Get in touch

Email support@oneoffendeavors.com, or ask in the One Off Endeavors Discord. Bug reports and ideas are both welcome. It helps to say which device you're on, the version from More ▸ About, and the game number at the top of the screen. Testing the beta? You can also send feedback, with a screenshot, straight from TestFlight.

Common questions

How do I play?

Move all 52 cards to the four foundations (top right), one pile per suit from ace up to king. Every card is dealt face up in eight columns. A column's last card can go onto a card one rank higher of the other colour, into an empty column, into one of the four free cells (top left), or home to its foundation. Tap a card to send it to its best spot, or drag it exactly where you want it.

Why won't a whole run move?

A run in order moves together only if your free spaces could carry it one card at a time: (empty free cells + 1) × 2 for each empty column. With four empty cells that's five cards; with an empty column too, ten. Moving into an empty column, it's half that. A run that's too long springs back — free up a cell or a column and try again.

Why do cards go to the foundations by themselves?

When no other card could still need it — an ace or a two, or any card once both foundations of the other colour are one rank behind — the game plays it home for you. It costs no move, and one Undo takes it back with the move that freed it. To place every card yourself, turn off Play cards home automatically in More ▸ Settings.

What are game numbers?

Every game has a number from 1 to 1,000,000, shown at the top of the screen. The numbers are Microsoft's, so game 617 here is game 617 in any FreeCell that uses them — you can trade games with friends. Tap the number to play any game by number. Almost every game can be won: of the first million, only eight can't, and New Game never deals them. (Game 11982 is the famous one.)

How is my Top 10 ranked?

By time — the fastest win first. Two wins in the same time rank by fewer moves. A run moved together counts as one move, and cards the game plays home count as none. Your Top 10 and your count of wins sync through iCloud when each device is signed in to the same Apple Account with iCloud on; syncing can take a few minutes.

My win isn't on the Game Center leaderboard

Only wins are posted, and only while you're signed in to Game Center. A leaderboard keeps your best time, so a slower win doesn't replace it, and a restarted game never counts. Changes can take a little while to show up in Game Center. (In the first beta builds the leaderboards aren't set up yet.)

What is Hard Core?

Two free cells instead of four — fewer games can be won. Turn it on in More ▸ Settings; changing it starts a new game. Hard Core wins are marked HC in your Top 10 and have their own Game Center leaderboard.

What does Restart do?

With Restart button turned on in Settings, Restart plays the same game again from the start. A restarted game doesn't count toward your Top 10, your wins or Game Center. Choosing a game by number is a new game, though, and counts.

Can I get a game back after deleting the app?

No. The game in progress and your settings are kept only on the device and go with the app. Your Top 10 and wins come back from iCloud if you were using it, and Game Center keeps your best times.

Can I change how it looks?

Yes, in More ▸ Settings: four card faces, four backs, and the win animation (or none). With Reduce Motion on in your device's settings, no win animation plays.

The app collects nothing itself. What iCloud and Game Center carry for you is in the FreeCell privacy policy.
